Midget and Junior Playoffs
U-13 AA NPYLL playoff news
The Midget A team ended its season in a tough loss to the number one seed SP Hornets during the quarter finals. Our boys played very well in the first half keeping the lead through most of it. The teams battled back and forth in the second half. Down by 1 goal with only minutes to go, Arden pulled its goalie in an attempt to regain possession and gave up two empty net goals loosing by 3. A very strong ending for a team that made the collective decision to enter the A league at the beginning of the season. All the boys agreed you only get better by laying better competition.
The Midget AA Diamondback team lost to the Hawks in the semi finals of the NPYLL playoffs. The next night they took care of the Crofton AA team in the county playoffs earning a spot in the Championship game. After getting down early in the first quarter they battled back to make it a close game. In the end, they ran out of time and lost to the SP Hornets. Our AA team did a fantastic job playing against teams in both leagues which were predominantly 7th grade teams while our boys are mostly 6th graders. This team will only loose a couple of team members next year and expect to have another great experience next year.

Arden Attackers: Anne Arundel County Junior Boys Lacrosse Champions for 2012
Arden 9, Bucs 8
The 2012 Junior B championship at the Old Mill turf field on June 3 was unquestionably the game of the year. By luck of the draw, these two teams managed to avoid each other during the regular season, but still managed to mark mirror-image records of 11-1.
The buildup to the championship game was equally exciting for both teams. The Arden squad had its hands full in the quarterfinals against a recharged SP team. In the end, Arden won the day by a single goal. In the previous contest between the two teams, it wasn't even close. SP certainly adjusted its game in the ensuing weeks.
In the semifinal game, Arden dominated the Centerville team, 12-3. On the other side of the bracket, the Bucs found themselves playing catch-up against a very determined South River squad. With nine minutes left in regulation time, the Bucs were down by two goals when the game was called due to lightening. The final nine minutes were played days later and the Bucs managed a come-from-behind victory, winning by 2 goals.
In the final, the Bucs were treated to a similar come-from-behind story, only this time, Arden came out on top.
A crowd of several hundred fans were treated to a classic lacrosse contest: two teams with equal records dueling it out for 2012 bragging rights.
The Bucs opened the game strong, scoring first. Arden returned the favor quickly. The see-saw contest continued through the first quarter and into the second quarter when, with the score at 3-2, Arden was penalized with a three-minute non-releasable penalty for an illegal stick.*
A minute was added to the penalty when one of the Arden coaches (yours truly) decided to argue the illegal stick call. Finishing out with the last 4 minutes of the second quarter with a man down, the Bucs managed three more goals.
Coming out of the halftime break, Arden was down by four goals; yet in the third, both teams managed to bury a few more in the net. Unfortunately for the home team, when the whistle blew for the final quarter, Arden remained down by four goals, 8-4.
The pep talk heading into the final quarter by coaches Merle 'Hofffy' Hoffman and Brett Callahan seemed to have done the trick -- the boys were duely inspired. Arden came out of the gates on fire, scoring two fast-break goals in rapid succession. The game was suddenly within reach. Ben Gillin won five face-offs in the final quarter, eventally sealing the Bucs’ fate.
With less than a minute remaining in regulation time, left attacker Tyson Sisk-Marshall somehow found the net through a crowd of defenders. The score was tied late in the game. Arden managed to take control as the clock wound down, but a last-second shot was wide. The game would be decided in overtime.
In overtime, Gillin won another face–off, but Arden lost control. The Bucs tore down the field on a last-ditch fast break, but Arden goalie Zack Leonard deflected the shot. Leonard, who counted eight saves on the day, played his best game of the season this night.
The Bucs recovered the ball on a missed clear by Arden and once again headed for the cage. Out of nowhere, Gillin lunged between two Bucs middies and intercepted a critical pass. Streaming down the field, he found an open Emerson Sodergreen at right attack. Unfortunately, his shot was low and wide.
Arden managed to recover the ball and sent it back up top to Gillen as Sodergreen cut around the left side of the crease. Gillen rifled a pass into a crowd of Bucs defenders and it was right on the money to Sodergreen. He fielded the pass, dodged a defender, shot and scored, winning the game for Arden, 9-8.
On the day, five different Arden offensive players scored, including an early game goal by LPM Zack Zimmerman. Middle Ricky Boilek, Middie Ben Gillen and attacker Tyson Sisk-Marshall each scored a goal. Sodergreen’s game-winner gave him a hat trick. The game ball was give to Leonard. The star attraction of the day was undoubtedly Arden's very resiliant defensive squad, which managed to keep opposing teams this season to to an average 4.2 goals per game. The Arden offense counted 143 goals scored over 15 games for an average 9.5 goals per game.
A game to remember.
*both team coaches concluded after the game that the stick was perfectly legal.
